Vattenfall Heat UK and Midlothian Council have formed a Joint Venture, known as Midlothian Energy Limited (MEL), which aims to regenerate and decarbonise the Midlothian region by supplying low carbon heat through a district heating network under construction in a former coal mining area. This is part of the development for the new town of Shawfair.
FES Group is working as Principal Contractor for Vattenfall UK on behalf of Midlothian Energy Limited (MEL) to build the transmission pipeline for the District Heating Network, Energy Centre and Heat Substations for Shawfair. The initial phase of the network will supply around 3,000 homes as well as education and retail properties in Shawfair Town.
As part of our commitment to the Shawfair development, FES Group has recently helped two local organisations with projects that will benefit their communities.
FES Group has donated £1,000 and gardening equipment to Newton Parish Church. This money will kickstart their fundraising for a new automated door for their church hall to make it more accessible for the many groups that utilise the hall. The gardening equipment will be used by the children at their after-school club to plant a vegetable garden.
Milllerhill Residents Group also benefitted from a donation of £1,000 towards a new gate for their play area and bat boxes to ensure that local bats don’t lose their habitat with the new housing development.
Councillor Dianne Alexander, Portfolio holder for Environment, Energy and Climate Change, at Midlothian Council, kindly came along to officiate the community benefits presentations. She commented:
“Midlothian Energy Limited is a fantastic example of partnership working between industry and the council that is leading the way in developing low carbon technologies in our drive to meet Scotland’s ambitious target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. Hopefully the development at Shawfair will provide inspiration for more low carbon infrastructure schemes throughout Scotland.
It is also great to see considerate constructors like FES Group giving back to the community in which they are operating, providing valuable and tangible benefits to local community groups.”
