ThermoFisher Covid-19 Production Facility

ThermoFisher Covid-19 Production Facility

This construction forms part of the ThermoFisher site at Perth. The facility provides specialized in sample collection products for critical Covid-19 testing and is expanding given the significant demand globally. The added capacity and increased efficiencies will allow ThermoFisher to scale production in Perth to more than 8 million filled tubes per week.

FES was fully responsible for leading the co-ordination for the overall project, for all MEP Services and all other third party co-ordination. Our scope of work included engineering, drafting and installation of various aspects including contractor design, manufacture and assembly of complex service modules, thermal expansion of wet services and brackets/supports.

New Cancer Research Ward

FES was employed as Design & Build Contractor for this highly specified cancer research and treatment centre. The works involved the strip out of existing clinical and administration areas and the conversion into a specialist clinical ward within the heart of this Acute Care Hospital.

The project encompassed the complete strip out of all flooring, ceiling, and services within this live working space above the fully operational HDU (High Dependency Unit) in the floor below. Not only were new MEP & HVAC Services to be installed within this area to service this specialist ward and departments; the central HVAC Services running through this space have to be upgraded/modified within the ceiling void – all of which to be done whilst maintaining HVAC Services to live wards and departments surrounding this new core area.

This project opportunity arose from the FES Groups successful participation in delivering the Louisa Jordan Hospital and performing ongoing maintenance within the operational hospital facility. Following a competitive bid process, FES were awarded the contract on the 2nd of November 2020 with an immediate start and a fast track delivery to be achieved.

The Covid Testing Regional Laboratory (CTRL North) is situated within the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service building on Aberdeen Royal Infirmary Foresterhill site. Primarily, the project entailed refurbishing an existing first floor area comprising of labs, consulting and administration areas to reconfigure in line with the test facility functional flow process.

The purpose of the facility is for the provision of laboratory and analytical services capable of processing up to 4000 Covid-19 test samples per day, with future capability to increase to up to 8000 samples. The project was part of the Government roll out scheme of regional test facilities and of a high profile, time critical nature.

The building fabric works involved the complete strip out of all existing areas back to the building shell whilst maintaining operation of essential MEP services such as electrical sub distribution, fire alarms etc.

The new works involved civil and structural alterations comprising of coring existing floor slabs for drains and other services, installation of new secondary steel supports  for plant and new openings through floor slabs etc. Internally, alterations to existing fire compartments, construction of all new internal partitions and doors, new suspended ceilings and floors including coverings all of which were required to suit the remodelled layout. Other works included the installation of all fittings, fixtures and equipment required by the relevant Room Data Sheets. The complete works were fully compliant with the relevant SHTM’s, British Standards and Code of Practice.

St John’s Hospital Ward 20

RMF Health, a consortium between FES Group and Robertson Construction, has delivered a £2.5m redevelopment of Ward 20 at St Johns Hospital, Livingston, in partnership with NHS Lothian.

The project included the construction of a new surgery theatre for eye and hand procedures, within Ward 20, to support pre- and post-operative care. St John’s Hospital is the regional hand trauma unit and is the referral and treatment centre for patients throughout Lothian.

As well as the additional theatre, the reconfiguration of the existing ward will create a new day surgery unit with two theatres and will improve access for patients requiring hand trauma surgery.

A new theatre had been identified as an area for improvement and will mean more patients can be seen. Patients waiting for hand trauma surgery can sometimes be admitted for an overnight stay, and this refurbishment will provide additional capacity for up to ten theatre sessions per week.
