Shawfair Low Carbon District Heating System Award

September 26, 2022

FES has been awarded the Design & Build contract to deliver a low-carbon district heating system that will serve the new Shawfair development on the outskirts of Edinburgh.  The scheme is being realised by Midlothian Energy Limited, a 50/50 joint venture between Midlothian Council and Vattenfall Heat UK.

The low-carbon district heating system will be supplied using heat that would otherwise be wasted from FCC Environment’s Millerhill Recycling and Energy Recovery Centre (RERC).  It is anticipated that the district heating system will assist Midlothian Council in their aim to reduce CO2 emissions in the area by saving 2,500 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Expected to start on site in 2023, FES will Design & Build the system’s district heating network, an energy centre and a series of heat substations which will distribute the heat to local housing development plots.

FES has made a firm commitment to the growing demand for renewable energy and low-carbon technology solutions, providing Energy Conservation Measures (ECM’s) and solutions to provide financial and environmental improvements. This exciting new appointment will further extend our portfolio of low-carbon district energy projects.

“FES is delighted to have been chosen as the Design and Build partner for Midlothian Energy Limited (MEL) at the new Shawfair Town. We look forward to working with MEL on the state-of-the-art low carbon heat project that will assist Vattenfall in meeting their aims to become fossil free within one generation. The project will demonstrate the world class engineering capabilities available within Scotland”. James Reid, Operations Director, FES
